LANVIN PRE-FALL COLLECTION 2016

The image of a strong woman with eclectic tastes and a penchant for self-expression emerges from Lanvin Pre-Fall 2016. The collection, created by the Lanvin studio, takes the House forward in a spirit of authenticity, with a subtle shift towards daywear and a considered reworking of key signatures and iconic pieces.

Drawing inspiration from Eighties’ creative subcultures, whose members would escape from reality into a world of their own by dressing up in a rich mix of garments from different eras, the collection explores ideas of individuality and eclecticism. Familiar pieces – foremost among them the treanch-coat – are cut from unexpected fabrics, textures are combined and contrasted, proportions are subtly altered, and couture details revisited in a new, more relaxed spirit. At the heart of it all is attitude: the attitude of the Lanvin woman – like the founder Jeanne Lanvin – has a full life and many facets, which she expresses through her wardrobe.

Capturing the mood of the collection is a coated cotton trench-coat, whose raw edges evoke the slightly undone, hand-finished feel that is a Lanvin signature. Likewise, the new shoulder – slim and structured with darts, then opening out into a fuller volume – references the House’s plays on proportion, Peeping out from under the trench is a “broderie anglaise” blouse in crisp cotton poplin, which gives the look a sweetly nostalgic spin. It is paired with rich burgundy palazzo pants – one of a number of pieces in a velvet so soft and fluid that it pools around the ankles or drapes gracefully at the waist, as on a bottle green day dress with a silk insert on the bodice. The theme of effortlessly elegant, subtly eccentric mixes is continued by a classic man’s herringbone overcoat, shrugged nonchalantly over a quintessentially Lanvin draped blouse in mustard silk, or a pair of ivory silk tuxedo trousers worn with a black guipure lace top and wool coat. Sometimes, the mix is in a single garment, as the collection pursues a patchwork theme with, for example, a colour-blocked trench, a silk top pieced together from the season’s floral, “pyjama” and necktie prints, and – most strikingly of all – a coat in fox, mink and raccoon, spray-dyed, graffiti-like, in rainbow hues.

The couture details associated with Lanvin run throughout the collection, from the sculpted silhouette of a top in duchess satin, through the bows on a fluid silk satin jumpsuit, to the ruffles on the sleeve of a tunic. Often, though, such details are shifted into a fresh context, as when a ruffles top with spaghetti straps is crafted from black leather or a strapless cocktail dress is cut from cotton for day.

For evening, Pre-Fall 2016 offers an array of elegant options – none more so than a draped one-shoulder column dress and sharply tailored, sleeveless neo-tuxedo. From the timelessly feminine to the edgily masculine – two different facets of the modern Lanvin woman.
