Maticevski – Early Spring 2018

Underlying Toni Maticevski’s work is a sensitive utilization of color and texture as well as an innate understanding of fabric and its applications. Maticevski’s invariably glamorous designs are sculptural pieces inspired and supported by the outline of the body, which play with the seemingly contradictory ideas of structure and fluidity. In This season Maticevski explores a more masculine and linear silhouette with squared edges. A mid-century touch is expanded upon with boxed corners and folds that push shapes forward and envelop the sides of the skirts. Textures are layered and enhanced throughout with subtle shimmering and glittering meshes. Maticevski takes inspiration from Anna-Wili Highfield’s masterful paper sculptures of horses and interprets them into garment form in bonded white jersey. In developing couture elements, Maticevski manipulates volume and proportion, layering tulle and tonal brocades. A collision of soft and sheer is contrasted against burnt desert red fabrics with salvages intact to highlight an igniting of the color and of a feeling that is close to Australia and close to the Maticevski brand’s core of mashing contrasting elements against one other.
