This so-good-they-name-it-twice expression of Comme des Garçons Comme des Garçons-ness works on at least two levels. There was a flotilla of deep navy or black tropical wool Peter Pan–collar double-breasted jerkin jackets, dresses, and pinafore or zigag-suspender full ruffled skirts: sort of but not quite progressive Edwardian widowswear. There was a suite of dark tailoring, navy and black again and in plain and pinstripes, whose sternness was muffled by arcs of ruffle at the hip, skirt, arm, or armhole, or on a nylon gilet worn above a topcoat with starkly cut flaps of fabric on the lapel: This was more Byronic dandy undertaker. Wide-collar jackets with faux-horn buttons strafed with blue stitching on blue nylon, equivalents in nearly seersucker, and white poplin and dark indigo velveteen blouses hung with bows all served to broaden the vocabulary. Rayon velvet bloomers and skirts in an in-Comme-gruously jolly embroidered georgette floral played analog cutesy yin to the austere yang of pure white polyester twill lab coats and skirts decorated with unsettlingly irregular slashes and slices.
