Meet Kong, Starck's Newest Creation, in NYC
Emeco, the manufacturer of the all aluminum Navy chair and Philippe Starck's Hudson Collection, will present Kong, a new chair and stool design by Starck, at the 2003 International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Designed for a Chinese restaurant in Paris, inspired by the furniture of Versailles and hand made in Pennsylvania by descendents of German craftsmen, Kong is a polished emblem of international détente.
Gregg Buchbinder, Emeco's President and CEO recalls, “Working with Stack is like making love. I don't know why it feels so good or works so well, I just follow my heart. It's marriage of craft and intuition. Starck and Emeco have a wonderful love affair – Kong is just a symbol.”
Kong is hand made by Emeco craftsmen at the Hanover, PA factory, utilizing the famous 77-Step process – the same process used to manufacture the Emeco Navy chair since 1944. While the shape recalls French designs of the classic era, this chair is built to undergo punishment from the worst barfly. All Emeco aluminum chairs are tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight, and are three times stronger than steel due to a proprietary heat treatment. This inherent strength allows for the gymnastic cantilever of the egg-shaped back. The anodized finish is near diamond hard
– Kir Royals, Manolo Blahnik scuffmarks, and even Revlon lipstick can be easily cleaned. Kong is meant to last for centuries.
Kong chairs and stools retail starting at $740 USD and will be available this summer at stores and contract dealers throughout the world. For more information, visit www.emeco.net.
