The Future of Silhouette

Rei Kawakubo has always put fashion to new extremes, having mastered the art of creating clothing which is powerful, emotive and sculptural. Runway is less a platform for clothes than big ideas and bigger shapes. And this new collection for fall 2017 is no exception.

Entitled “The Future of Silhouette”, the collection took familiar expectations and ideas of female silhouettes and offered a radical new proposition in their place.

The show opened with two models dressed in towering white looks without sleeves or arm holes and went on to include wildly sculptural dresses made up of fabrics which were repurposed from their original contexts. With exaggerated silhouettes and new forms on display, the fabrics were equally untraditional, with outfits and wigs comprised of felt, metallic foil, packing materials, insulation and mattress fabric.
