SALLY SMART FOR MARNI

Contemporary art is a continual source of inspiration for Marni and has always been an integral part of the brand aesthetic. Close relationships and ongoing communication with artists have resulted in a collaboration with Sally Smart for the Pre Fall 2017 collection.

The versatile Australian artist explores various areas of interest, mainly through the technique of collage. The unexpected forms of different materials and various types of image are combined to create stylised human figures, which take shape in impossible, yet strong and vibrant movements.

This concept leads to the unique illustrations which enliven the collection’s jersey t-shirts and unfurl across the satin dresses. The images are re-imagined, becoming patterns on viscose tops, bags, or embroideries on sweatshirts and white poplin shirts.

Sally Smart’s approach is free from pre-defined concepts, and finds its counterpart in Marni’s passion for bold colour combinations and materials. The outcome is a unique style that is ironic, and yet vaguely naive.
